Selma Blair is looking to return to the Met Gala red carpet 'one day' following a 'remission' in her battle with multiple sclerosis (MS). The actress, 53, said she will be watching fashion's biggest night on Monday but will not be in attendance this year, in an interview with Us Weekly.
'I used to be a big Met Gala attendee,' she said during the Calamigos Ranch Resort & Spa's Leading Hotels of the World accreditation celebration on Friday. Blair, who last attended the glitzy event in 2009, said that though she hasn't gone in 'many years' she still has 'wonderful memories of it.'
'My first time was with Behnaz Sarafpour, then I went a couple years with Chanel and more recently, I think, with Marc Jacobs — but that was probably 20 years ago.' 'One day I will be back at the Met, because I love fashion. I love wardrobes. And it is a passion of mine, so I really appreciate what they do and I think it's an amazing event.'
'I love watching what everyone's wearing and I will be watching,' she added. The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Benefit, also known as the Met Gala, falls on the first Monday in May every year. The theme of this year's event - widely considered the Super Bowl of celebrity red carpets - is 'Costume Art', while the dress code is 'Fashion Is Art.' The dress code calls on the A-list attendees to explore how designers use the human body as a blank canvas.
Leading the charge is a powerhouse trio of co-chairs, with Beyonce, Nicole Kidman and Venus Williams joining forces with Vogue's global editorial director Anna Wintour to oversee fashion's biggest night. It's the first time tennis superstar Williams has co-chaired the gala. Kidman previously co-chaired the star-studded event in 2003 as well as 2005, and Beyonce was an honorary chair in 2013.
The New York City museum will pair historical and contemporary garments from the Costume Institute for the exhibition, which will be loosely divided into three categories, including the classical and the nude body, aging and pregnant bodies, and the anatomical body. In March, Blair was the epitome of elegance while attending the 2026 Vanity Fair Oscar Party, where she walked the red carpet with a cane in hand.
Last year, Blair gave an incredible update on her years-long battle with MS. The Cruel Intentions star attended The Daily Front Row's 9th Annual Fashion Los Angeles Awards, where she revealed she was 'truly in remission.' 'I am doing amazingly well. I've been feeling great for about a year,' she told People at the event. 'But I am finally well enough to really, genuinely ... I always try and feel my best, but now that I actually have stamina and energy and getting out and going out isn't so scary.'
Selma was asked what she's looking forward to now that she has her health back and she said she hasn't had any dreams since her diagnosis. 'I think maybe since the diagnosis,' she explained when asked what she meant. 'You're just tired all the time. I spent so much of my life so tired from being unwell that I think I just was trying to get through the day.' Blair continued: 'And now it's like, wait, I realize I don't know what my goals are.' She went on to say that her thoughts are 'much more career-oriented' these days and said she'd love to get back into acting and that is something she is actively working on.
In January, Variety reported that Blair has three upcoming movies going into production: Stay Forte, a drama about the Israel-Hamas war; a supernatural thriller called Silent; and a twin drama There There. 'I started feeling really better this last year and I'm back at work and doing things, so I will have things to announce,' she said at the time. Blair announced that she had officially been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in an Instagram post that was shared in August of 2018 and revealed she 'hurts all the time' because of her illness. Multiple sclerosis (known as MS) is a condition in which the immune system attacks the body and causes nerve damage to the brain and spinal cord. It is an incurable, lifelong condition.
