Scooby Doo Cast: Feuds, Firings, and New Careers

Where the original Scooby Doo cast are now from co-star feud to unexpected career. The beloved cartoon series was brought to life on the big screen back in 2002 with the likes of Matthew Lillard and Sarah Michelle Gellar. By Tianna Corbin, TV reporter PUBLISHED: 08:00, Sun, Jun 14, 2026.

The movie first came out back in 2002. Since the 1960s, people across the globe have watched the cowardly Great Dane and his Mystery Inc friends expose fraudulent monsters. The beloved franchise follows four teenagers, Fred Jones, Daphne Blake, Velma Dinkley, and Shaggy Rogers, as they solve mysteries with a few mishaps along the way.

Recently, Netflix announced that a live-action Scooby-Doo is on the way with the Origins series focusing on the group of friends and their final summer at camp, where they find a lost Great Dane puppy who may have witnessed a supernatural murder.

However, this isn’t the first time the Mystery Inc team have been brought to life as the Hanna-Barbera cartoon had its first live-action adaptation back in 2002. It saw the likes of Freddie Prinze Jr, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Matthew Lillard and Linda Cardellini step into the iconic roles as they solved the paranormal events at a Spring Break resort called Spooky Island.

Since the movie aired 24 years ago this weekend, we’re taking a look at what the cast has been up to since the film first hit screens.

Co-star feud

The actor spoke about his 'terrible' time on-set. After his role as Fred in the films, Freddie Prinze Jr went on to star in the gripping TV series 24 as Cole Ortiz. He joined the cast of the show in 2010 for its eighth and final season. However, speaking about his time on set, it seems as though he didn't see eye to eye with the lead actor, Kiefer Sutherland.

In 2014, Freddie spoke about his time working with Kiefer while at Comic-Con, calling his former colleague the "most unprofessional dude in the world." He later went on to tell ABC News that his time on the programme was terrible, commenting: "I hated every moment of it."

The actor also shared how the experience resulted in him stepping away from the spotlight, as he added: "I just wanted to quit the business after that. So, I just sort of stopped." Following his remarks, Kiefer responded to Freddie's comments via his rep, who said: "Kiefer worked with Freddie Prinze, Jr. more than five years ago, and this is the first he has heard of Freddie's grievances. Kiefer enjoyed working with Freddie and wishes him the best."

Acting snub

Linda was once 'fired' from her role in Family Guy. Actress Linda Cardellini, who played Velma in the films, went on to star in the Marvel movie franchises as Laura Barton and the heartbreaking Netflix series Dead to Me. However, there was one role that fans wouldn’t have seen the 50-year-old in, as she admitted her part was once axed without her knowledge.

While appearing on The Late Late Show with James Corden back in 2019, she was sitting next to Family Guy show creator Seth MacFarlane when the awkward moment unfolded. As host James hinted, she could feature in the adult cartoon, Linda replied: "Well, funny you should mention that, because I got fired from it once. I did. I did. I did a voice on it, and I told everybody to tune in and watch. And then when I watched it, I was replaced."

As Seth squirmed next to her, Linda confessed that no one had told her that her part had been replaced as the show creator offered her part on another one of his shows, American Dad.

Unexpected career

Sarah turned her attention to cooking. Although Sarah Michelle Gellar continues to act, having starred in the likes of Dexter: Original Sin, Ringer and Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, she’s also turned her attention elsewhere. In 2015, she co-founded the lifestyle and baking brand Foodstirs alongside Galit Laibow and Greg Fleishman.

Two years later, she released her first cookbook, Stirring Up Fun With Food, which contains over 100 recipes and was designed for parents to prepare food with their children. The actress has two children of her own, Charlotte Grace and Rocky James, whom she shares with her husband, Freddie Prinze Jr, who she married the same year Scooby Doo was released.
