Presenter Sara Cox has announced that her BBC Radio 2 breakfast show will launch next month, expressing her excitement to get started. The 51-year-old revealed that the first episode of her new programme will air on July 6, with Hollywood star Tom Hanks joining her in the studio as her inaugural guest.
Announcement on Vernon Kay's Show
Cox made the announcement while appearing on Vernon Kay's Radio 2 show on Monday, stating she is "very, very excited" to begin. She said: "There's been quite a lot of mystery about when the brand new Sara Cox Breakfast Show begins on BBC Radio 2. I've been quite mysterious and going, 'it's in the summer' and waggling my eyebrows mysteriously. But I can now announce, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, and everyone in between, please do join me for my very first Breakfast Show on Radio 2 on 6th of July. Three weeks today! Very very excited. It is 6.30am."
Early Start and First Guest
Joking about the early start, Cox said she plans to set 42 alarms and added: "I can't wait – it's so exciting." She also revealed that her first guest will be Tom Hanks, star of the upcoming Toy Story 5, and expressed her anticipation to speak with the Oscar-winning actor.
New Format and Background
The BBC confirmed that the breakfast programme will feature a "fresh new format" incorporating listeners' "favourite bits" from Cox's previous teatime show. Cox was announced as the new host in April, describing the role as a "dream" and saying she was "ecstatic, honoured and incredibly chuffed." She replaces Scott Mills, who was dismissed by the BBC earlier this year after it emerged that the Metropolitan Police had investigated him in 2016 over allegations of serious sexual offences involving a teenage boy between 1997 and 2000.
The Sara Cox Breakfast Show will air on BBC Radio 2 from 6:30 AM on July 6.
