Ruth Gemmell, best known for playing Dowager Viscountess Violet Bridgerton in Netflix's hit period drama Bridgerton, has a life story that includes both professional triumph and personal tragedy. The 58-year-old actress was born in Bristol and raised in County Durham and Darlington after her parents separated. She trained at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London, beginning her career in the 1990s with roles in The Bill and Silent Witness.
Her breakthrough came in 1997 with the film Fever Pitch, based on Nick Hornby's memoir and starring Colin Firth. She also played Carly Beaker, the mother of Tracy Beaker, in the 2004 BBC film Tracy Beaker: The Movie of Me, later reprising the role in the 2021 miniseries My Mum Tracy Beaker. Other notable TV credits include Casualty, EastEnders, Father Brown and Doc Martin.
Gemmell was married to actor Ray Stevenson from 1997 to 2005, having met on the set of the drama series Band of Gold. Stevenson, who later married Italian anthropologist Elisabetta Caraccia, died in 2023 at age 58 from undisclosed causes while filming in Italy. Gemmell has since remarried in 2015, keeping her husband's identity private. She revealed in a viral TikTok clip that she is married to her oldest friend's brother, and told The Sunday Telegraph that it is 'lovely being married to a man who isn't an actor'.
In the current fourth season of Bridgerton, her character Violet enjoys a blossoming romance with Lord Marcus Anderson, played by Daniel Francis. The season, which focuses on Benedict Bridgerton's love story, premiered on Netflix on 29th January, with more episodes due later in the month.
