Tears for Fears Star Roland Orzabal, 64, Welcomes First Child with Wife Emily

Tears for Fears star Roland Orzabal, 64, has become a father for the third time after his wife Emily, 38, gave birth to their first child together earlier this summer. The news was revealed by his bandmate Curt Smith in an interview with Vulture, who explained that the birth had forced the band to postpone their summer touring plans.

“We were going to tour this summer, but Roland and his wife had a baby in June,” Smith said. “So the summer touring obviously was off because you don’t want to be away from home that close to having a baby.” The band is now scheduled to perform later this year in Las Vegas, after which Orzabal will return to Los Angeles for eight months.

The couple announced the pregnancy on Instagram with a photo of Emily showing her baby bump in front of a rock backdrop, captioned with a heart emoji. The birth comes five years after they married in an intimate ceremony on Aspen Mountain in Colorado in 2020, following a pandemic-related postponement. They later celebrated with a larger wedding at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire.

Orzabal, who met Emily at a restaurant in Los Angeles, has credited her with reuniting him with his Tears for Fears bandmate and teaching him kindness. “She is an amazing influence – teaching me how to be kind and polite, and not hostile all the time,” he told The Guardian.

This is Orzabal’s first child with Emily. He was previously married to his teenage sweetheart Caroline Orzabal for 35 years, with whom he had two sons, Pascal and Raoul. Caroline died in 2017 after battling alcoholism-related dementia and cirrhosis. Following her death, Orzabal said his world “sort of fell apart” and he sought help in rehab, later finding it difficult to return to music.
