Richard Keys Opens Up on Controversial Split and New Marriage
Former Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys has publicly addressed the circumstances surrounding his split from his ex-wife Julia and his subsequent marriage to Lucie Rose, a friend of his daughter who is 31 years his junior. The media personality refuted several long-standing claims about the breakup in a recent interview with The Telegraph, asserting that the truth has been widely misconstrued.
Denial of Cancer Timeline Allegations
Keys strongly denied reports that he abandoned Julia while she was battling thyroid cancer. "I didn’t leave Julia dying of cancer, or suffering with cancer," he stated. "Sadly, she had cancer in 2008 and ’09, and we ran into a genius surgeon who removed it. During that period, we travelled 30 days straight to find the best specialists at the best hospitals, the best anaesthetists."
He explained that he maintained a low profile during her treatment to protect her privacy. "I remember working at Arsenal on the day of the operation. It wasn’t that I was uninterested, I just didn’t want people to know she was unwell or to bring in the intrusion that would naturally follow."
Addressing the Affair and Family Fallout
The split, which occurred in 2016, was allegedly due to an affair with Lucie Rose, whom Keys married in 2023. He pushed back against the narrative that he coerced Lucie, describing her as "one of the most powerful, strong-minded individuals you’ll come across" and noting her passion for women's rights. "What’s damaging is that people presume I ran away with my daughter’s best mate, locked her in a room, and gave her no choice about whether she wanted to be with me or not. All of which is nonsense," he said.
However, Julia's perspective, detailed in her 2018 book The MANScript, paints a different picture. She wrote, "Richard's affair didn't just devastate my world, but the world of our children Jemma and Josh too." She added that Keys only admitted to the affair two years later, acknowledging the deceit and damage caused.
Family Struggles and Reconciliation
Julia revealed she faced multiple challenges during the affair, including her past cancer battle, nursing her mother through cancer, and her father's dementia diagnosis. The family rift deepened as their daughter Jemma struggled with alcoholism after the 36-year marriage ended.
Keys clarified that Jemma and Lucie were not best friends but had socialised together, admitting there was anger when the affair came to light. Despite the tensions, he expressed a desire to become a father again with Lucie, despite nearing 70. "If something of that nature happened, I would be a very, very happy man," he said, reflecting on how older fathers might be more relaxed and understanding.
This candid interview sheds light on the complex personal dynamics behind a high-profile split, challenging previous media narratives while highlighting ongoing family divisions.
