Prince Harry delivered a blunt six-word response when questioned about why he and Meghan Markle have retained their royal titles after stepping back from royal duties. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were asked by CNN's Anderson Cooper in early 2023 why they had not relinquished their titles, given their criticisms of the Royal Family. Harry replied: "And what difference would that make?"
Background of the Titles
The titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex were bestowed upon Harry and Meghan by the late Queen Elizabeth II on their wedding day in May 2018. Despite the couple's announcement on January 8, 2020, that they would step back from royal roles and seek financial independence in the United States, they have continued to use these titles frequently.
Calls to Strip Titles
Many have questioned why the titles have not been removed, especially since the couple no longer perform duties on behalf of King Charles III. Following allegations made by the couple in a 2021 Oprah Winfrey interview, their 2022 Netflix docuseries, and Harry's memoir Spare, reports indicate that the Royal Family held discussions at the highest level about stripping the titles. However, no action has been taken.
Harry's Defense of the Titles
During the Anderson Cooper interview, Harry defended his use of the title by arguing that it would not change the dynamics with his family. He also claimed that every attempt to resolve issues privately was met with briefings and leaks against him and his wife. "The family motto is 'never complain, never explain'. But it's just a motto. And it doesn't really hold," Harry said.
Loss of Security and Upcoming UK Visit
One consequence of stepping back was Harry's loss of automatic entitlement to armed police protection while in the UK. The Duke and his family are expected to arrive in Britain soon for the one-year countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham, a trip largely funded by taxpayers. Harry had submitted an official request for police protection, but it is believed to have been denied. Additionally, a review by the Risk Management Board (RMB) regarding his security requirements has not yet taken place, despite months of waiting.
