Piers Morgan has ignited a firestorm of criticism after posting a glowing tribute to Donald Trump on social media to mark the former US president's 80th birthday.

The broadcaster and journalist, who has known Trump for two decades, shared a carousel of images on Instagram featuring the pair together over the years. The photos included red carpet events, moments from The Apprentice USA, and interview encounters.
In his lengthy birthday message, Morgan wrote: "Happy 80th Birthday, Donald Trump. I’ve known you 20 years, and can safely say you’re the most unique, resilient, energetic and polarising public figure I’ve ever met." He added: "We’ve had our ups and downs over the years, as these photos attest, but our friendship’s never been boring and I will never forget how loyal you were to me when I was (temporarily) sent packing from America in 2014 and you were one of the few people across the pond to stay in touch when I was of no use to you."
Morgan concluded: "It’s not always easy being your friend, but then people say the same about me. Enjoy your big day, Mr President!"
Backlash Erupts
The tribute quickly drew a wave of negative reactions in the comments section. One user wrote: "Are you actually serious? You should be distancing yourself from this man rather than celebrating him."
