Cape Verde defender Roberto 'Pico' Lopes stopped a BBC interview mid-way and walked away, visibly emotional after his nation's heartbreaking World Cup exit against reigning champions Argentina. The round of 32 match saw Cape Verde, making their first World Cup appearance, take Argentina to extra time before losing 3-2.
Match Drama and Emotional Aftermath
Cape Verde twice came from behind, with Sidny Lopes Cabral scoring a stunning equaliser in extra time to make it 2-2. However, an own goal in the second half of extra time sealed their fate. Lopes, a centre-back born in Ireland but qualifying through his father, played every minute of the tournament.
Speaking to the BBC after the match, Lopes said: "We said coming into this tournament that we wanted to make history, we wanted to show that we deserve to be here, and I think overall that we showed we’re more than capable of competing with some of the best teams in the world."
Lopes' Remarkable Journey
Ten years ago, Lopes was working as a mortgage advisor. He earned his Cape Verde call-up after being contacted via LinkedIn. When asked about his personal journey, he became emotional: "Yeah, look, I try to stay in the moment as much as I can. Like, I think there will be a time for me to reflect, but it’s been amazing... the fact that where I was ten years (ago), to where I am now, though, there’s a little bit of pride there as well because…" He then stopped and walked away.
His club, Shamrock Rovers, responded with a simple "proud" message and a green heart emoji. Fans also showed support, with one writing: "No Pico no party, what an absolute hero! He deserves it all.." Another said: "Incredible @picolopes Absolute hero."
Tournament Performance
Cape Verde advanced from a group containing Spain, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia, drawing all three matches. Lopes earned his 49th cap against Argentina, having made his international debut in 2019. He is expected to receive a hero's welcome in both Cape Verde and Ireland upon return.
