BBC viewers were quick to voice their complaints about the latest instalment of The One Show, after an interview with guests Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White was branded awkward and uncomfortable.
This evening's programme (September 28) featured Alex Jones and Roman Kemp at the helm, with the show bringing some major stars to the famous green sofa. Pop sensation Will Young appeared alongside the cast of Aaron Sorkin's forthcoming film, The Social Reckoning.
Name mix-up on the green sofa
Oscar-winning actress Mikey Madison and her co-star Jeremy Allen White were first up for questioning by Alex and Roman about their roles in the movie, which draws from true events. Yet audiences at home noticed a distinct awkwardness during their conversation.
At one moment, Roman's enquiry about whether Mikey's character, Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen, might be seen as an underdog was firmly dismissed by the actress. Subsequently, Mikey appeared to glance around the studio and fidget with her hands while her co-star Jeremy fielded questions.
In a further blunder, presenter Alex completely mixed up the award-winner's name, calling her Madison instead. She swiftly attempted to rectify the mistake, though only after the star had begun responding, and the error didn't escape her guest's notice.
Viewers react to awkward atmosphere
She replied: "That's ok, at least you didn't call me Mickey," before expressing frustration that people constantly got her name wrong. The obvious lack of chemistry between the guests and BBC presenters wasn't lost on viewers.
"Wow...these two are hard work! #TheOneShow," one observed. "Why are these guests acting so bored/half asleep. Do they not want to promote their show?" queried a second viewer.
Another, alluding to the uncomfortable interview, speculated: "They both seem a little nervous." Meanwhile, a fourth BBC viewer grumbled: "American actors are SO boring!"
Fans compare interview to Alan Partridge
A fifth wrote: "They looked like they wanted to be ANYWHERE else! Either that or they'd had a row before the show. Felt very uncomfortable." Another concurred, noting: "There was an awkward Alan Partridge vibe to the interview."
Yet another BBC fan remarked: "Such hard work...look like they were a couple and had a big fall out before a dinner with friends!"
