Edinburgh council officials have reportedly described Oasis fans as 'fat, drunk and rowdy' in leaked safety briefings ahead of the band's reunion tour. According to documents seen by The Sun, the briefings warn that fans attending the Murrayfield gigs in August will be 'mainly middle-aged men who take up more room'. The leaked papers also express concerns that performers at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe may pull out due to potential clashes with 'rowdy' Oasis concertgoers.
The secret planning briefings reportedly state: 'Concerned about the safety of the Fringe and its performers. Many performers are considering not attending for that weekend. There is concern about crowds as they are already rowdy and the tone of the band. Middle-aged men take up more room. Consider this when working out occupancy.'
In response, Culture and Communities Convener Councillor Margaret Graham said: 'We’re very proud to host the biggest and best events in Edinburgh throughout the year... As with any major event, we prepare extensively alongside our partners to ensure the safety and best possible experience of everyone involved – and Oasis are no different.' She added that the council is working closely with local residents and looking forward to the concerts.
Die-hard Oasis fan David Walker, 44, of the Oasis Collectors Group, criticised the comments: 'To call fans drunk, middle-aged, and fat is a nasty, sneering stereotype — it’s a jaundiced view. People want to have a great time.' He noted that the fanbase now includes a new generation of young fans and parents introducing their children to the band.
Liam and Noel Gallagher are set to reunite in July for their first tour in 16 years, Oasis Live '25, after splitting in 2009. Rehearsals are underway, with Liam describing them as 'spiritual' and stating the band are being 'professionals' with 'no time for drinking'. The tour includes dates across the UK, America, South America and Asia.
