One of the finest films of the 21st century featuring Michael Caine is being broadcast on BBC Two this evening. This dystopian action thriller, released two decades ago, is set in the year 2027.
Based on a Novel
Adapted from PD James' 1992 novel of the same name, Children of Men premiered in 2006 to widespread critical acclaim. Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón, the film presents an alternate timeline where two decades of human infertility have pushed civilization to the brink of collapse. In this grim reality, the United Kingdom is overwhelmed by asylum seekers, who face detention, deportation, and even execution by the government.
Star-Studded Cast
Clive Owen stars as civil servant Theo Faron, who aids a refugee named Kee. The cast also includes Julianne Moore, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Charlie Hunnam, and Michael Caine. Caine portrays Jasper, an old hippy inspired by his friend John Lennon.
The film is hailed as one of the greatest of the 21st century, ranking 13th in a BBC critics' poll of the best films from 2000 to 2016.
