Ari Emanuel, executive chairman of William Morris Endeavour (WME), has spoken openly about his relief at no longer representing Meghan Markle, following the agency's decision to part ways with the Duchess of Sussex in 2025.
In an interview with The Sunday Times, Emanuel bluntly said: "Here's the great thing: I don't have to think about that anymore." His comments come after the agency quietly ended its representation of Markle last year.
A Partnership That Soured
Markle signed with WME in April 2023, where she was represented by a team including Emanuel, senior talent partner Brad Slater, and Jill Smoller, who has also represented Serena Williams. The agency was hired to boost her commercial and creative initiatives, including film and television development, major corporate partnerships, and representation of Archewell, the media company she co-founded with Prince Harry.
However, the partnership reportedly began to crumble within months. According to Page Six, Markle had not met with Emanuel since January 2024, nine months after signing. Most of her communication was with agency staff rather than senior leadership.
Dispute and Departure
Insiders told the publication that tensions rose after the 2023 holidays when Markle asked for an urgent strategy meeting and "expected decks and plans," sparking a dispute. An industry source later revealed that following their heated exchange, Emanuel lost patience with the account, saying, "Ari was done with her."
Reports of the workplace dispute emerged in February 2025, with suggestions that WME was dropping Markle because she was "too demanding" and "difficult to work with." The agency rejected these claims at the time.
Netflix Setbacks
Emanuel's comments follow several significant setbacks for the Duchess. Netflix cancelled her lifestyle and cooking show, With Love, Meghan, in January after two series and a Christmas special. Two months later, Netflix ended its investment in Markle's lifestyle brand, As Ever, reportedly returning pallets of unsold products including speciality teas, fruit spreads, honey and wine.
Variety reported that the streaming giant became frustrated with continued communication issues. Insiders said the Duchess would sometimes leave Zoom meetings early if she was offended by comments during creative discussions.
