Meghan Markle's acting future is under scrutiny as reports emerge that she could return for a special episode of the legal drama Suits, with royal experts questioning whether her status as a princess limits the roles she can play.
The Duchess of Sussex, 45, starred as Rachel Zane in the American legal drama series Suits before marrying Prince Harry in May 2018. She appeared in seven of the show's nine series, with the finale airing in September 2019.
Reports of a Suits Reunion
It has been reported that NBC Universal is considering a one-off two-hour reunion episode and is keen to get the royal on board. A senior production source told The Daily Express that NBC Universal is ready to assign a "substantial budget" to get the Duchess on the show, with reports she could be paid as much as $5million (around £3.7million) to do it.
In an episode of Daily Express podcast Royals Unscripted, royal editor Emily Ferguson said she's "hearing a lot of things that she is definitely going to return to acting". She added: "She's flicking through the scripts, she's trying to find the role that suits her."
Royal Status Limits Roles
Discussing reports Meghan has been approached for a reboot of Suits, Ferguson said: "I think, to be honest, that's the perfect move for her. She knows the role, it seems like they're bending over backwards to get her. They're going to film it in UK, they're offering her a whopping paycheck, and just getting her back into that two-hour special episode is going to put her back on the map again."
However, Ferguson raised the question of whether her status as a royal, married to a son of King Charles, will limit the kind of roles she can do now. "The thing is, she's got to consider now, she's married to a prince. Can she play a romantic role now?" she asked.
Co-host's Concerns Over Romantic Scenes
Co-host and royal commentator Carole Malone said: "I don't know whether you watched Suits, but I watched quite a few of the episodes, and some of them were quite raunchy, I have to tell you." Carole referred to a steamy office scene Meghan featured in, adding "she can't be doing that again". Ferguson questioned whether she could even do an on-screen kiss these days.
Carole suggested that "she might have to kiss them". The commentator added that it would "suit her very well but I can't see her getting major roles".
Meghan and Harry stepped down as senior working royals in early 2020, and relocated to California where they spent the last few years raising their two young children, Archie and Lilibet. The pair returned to the UK in late August, with the Palace confirming that they remain non-working royals.
