Maya Jama has personally stepped in to shut down speculation that she and Stormzy have rekindled their romance after sharing a video of herself singing along to his track One Second on Instagram. The Love Island presenter, 32, sent fans into detective mode with the clip, which showed her sitting in a car with headphones in, mouthing the lyrics: ‘I could tell you stories ’bout my life. ‘I’ve seen hope and I’ve seen struggle through these eyes. So give me just one second of your time.’

Given Maya and Stormzy’s famously on-again, off-again history, it did not take long for the internet to decide that this could only mean one thing. Adding fuel to the fire, eagle-eyed fans also noticed that Maya had followed the 33-year-old rapper on Instagram again, prompting hopes that one of Britain’s most beloved former couples might be preparing for round three.
Unfortunately for those already dusting off their hats for the hypothetical wedding, Maya has now made it very clear that a good song is sometimes just a good song. After UK Rap Daily reposted the video on X, writing: ‘Maya Jama posted an Instagram story singing along to “One Second” by Stormzy 👀’, she responded directly.
‘🤣🤣 I like the song. We have always been friends. No one is back together, rest with the theories ❤️🙏🏽,’ she wrote. Case closed, then.
Fans react to direct response
Fans were amused by Maya’s unusually direct response, with one writing: ‘And that’s how you shut down a rumour 💀 💀.’ Another pointed out the rather obvious explanation for her choice of listening material: ‘People act like just because it’s her ex she can’t like his music it’s literally stormzy lol she would probably be a fan even if they didn’t date.’
Others were not quite ready to abandon the dream. ‘Singing the song definitely did not help the rumors,’ one person conceded, while another lamented: ‘I thought the world was healing again 😭🌍 Please get back together.’
History of their relationship
Maya and Stormzy first began dating in 2015, when they were 20 and 21 respectively, after initially starting out as friends. Speaking about the beginning of their relationship to Vogue in 2018, Maya admitted she’d fancied him from the start but spent some time attempting to play it cool. ‘I knew I fancied him from the start. But I didn’t want anything yet, because you know, you’re trying to do the whole friend situation at first,’ she said.
Their relationship lasted until 2019, when the pair split after four years together. Stormzy later spoke candidly about his feelings for Maya, admitting in 2020: ‘I’ve never loved anyone how I’ve loved her.’ He added that he wanted to become ‘the man who she needs’, saying at the time: ‘I want to marry her.’
Four years after their original split, fans finally got the reunion they’d been hoping for when Maya and Stormzy were spotted holidaying together in 2023. The pair subsequently confirmed they’d decided to give their relationship another shot, but their second chapter came to an end in July 2024. Announcing their split in a joint statement, they explained that they’d decided to ‘try for the final time’ in August 2023 and had spent the following year attempting to make their relationship work. ‘We tried, and it didn’t work, and that’s okay,’ they said.
The former couple also stressed that they remained friends, something Maya has now reiterated more than two years later. Although, judging by the reaction online, Maya may want to prepare herself for another round of theories the next time One Second comes up on shuffle.
