Maura Higgins has revealed why she chose a life of celibacy, after previously disclosing she had not had sex for over a year. The 35-year-old TV star, best known for her appearances on Love Island and The Traitors US, told Cosmopolitan that she needed a break from men following a series of 'terrible exes'.
Speaking about her decision, Higgins said: 'I’m not saying I’m not open [to a relationship], but I’m not checking my DMs to see who’s in there.' She explained that celibacy was not planned, but rather a natural response to her past experiences. 'It wasn’t even a plan to be celibate. I didn’t put a timeline on it. I just had terrible exes and needed a break,' she said.
Higgins emphasised that she wanted to focus on herself and her career. 'I wanted to focus on me, my career, and my energy. Now that it’s been over a year, I don’t even think of men,' she added. However, she did not rule out future relationships, stating she is not actively searching for one.
The star, who posed for a racy photoshoot with the magazine, also discussed her trust issues, which she attributes to being cheated on by most of her ex-partners. 'I've already got severe trust issues. I've been cheated on by the majority of my exes - that's the reason I've been celibate for a whole year,' she said.
Higgins previously made headlines when she suggested her ex-boyfriend Pete Wicks had been unfaithful after finding texts to other women on his phone. However, insiders denied the claims at the time. She admitted to becoming an 'investigator' in relationships, often checking a partner's phone within a week of dating.
The TV personality's last known relationship was with Wicks, and she has also been linked to Curtis Pritchard and Chris Taylor, both of whom she met on Love Island.
