Dame Mary Berry has revealed that her husband Paul Hunnings, 93, was hospitalised after breaking his ribs in a fall. The TV cook and author, who has been married to Paul for nearly 60 years, shared the health update in an interview with Saga magazine.
Mary said she is now caring for her husband at home, adding that the experience has deepened their bond. 'He’s just had a tumble with broken ribs. I’m very sympathetic about that. But he’s getting better day by day. Soon we’ll have him back to his own old self,' she said.
The former Great British Bake Off judge spoke of her joy in looking after Paul, stating: 'I love my husband far more now than I’ve ever done before. Now, in his dotage, he’s not so well. It’s a sheer pleasure looking after him, because he’s so grateful.'
Mary, 88, also credited her long marriage to walking away from arguments. 'If any disagreements come up, I open the back door and just go out and maybe pick some flowers or get some apples,' she explained. The couple, who married in 1966, enjoy playing croquet together twice a week to stay active.
Mary will return to screens later this month in the BBC series 'Mary at 90: A Lifetime of Cooking'.
