Mark Piznarski, the acclaimed director known for his work on Gossip Girl and other beloved teen dramas, has died at the age of 71. His death occurred on Saturday April 4, but the news was only confirmed and reported when his name appeared in an "In Memoriam" section in the latest Directors Guild of America (DGA) Monthly issue.
Career Defining Teen TV
Piznarski's television career began on My So-Called Life, and he became known for directing pilots of much-loved shows, helping them get commissioned. Alongside Gossip Girl, he worked on series such as Veronica Mars and Everwood.
He directed 14 episodes of Gossip Girl across all six seasons, including the 2007 pilot. His work included pivotal episodes such as the 100th episode, "G.G.," and the series finale, "New York, I Love You XOXO," which aired in December 2012.
Other Notable Pilots
He also directed the first two episodes of Veronica Mars, starring Kristen Bell. His impression was such that Christopher Lowell's character on the show, Stosh "Piz" Piznarski, was named for him.
Other notable pilots he directed included Relativity in 1996, Everwood in 2002, Still Life in 2003, In Plain Sight, the rebooted 90210 in 2008, and The Lying Game in 2011.
Film Work and Tributes
Though best known for his small screen work, Piznarski also made a mark on the big screen. His first proper industry job was an assistant-director role on the 1986 drama About Last Night, starring Demi Moore and Rob Lowe. He also worked on Here on Earth in 2000 and the coming-of-age drama Looking for Sunday in 2006.

For over three decades, Mark Piznarski was one of the most prolific and influential directors in modern television. A master at shaping defining teen dramas and hit series, his eye for emotion, pacing, and visual style helped craft some of the most memorable TV moments across generations. Rest in peace, Mark Piznarski. Thank you for bringing so many incredible stories to life."
A third chimed in: "Mark Piznarski was a veteran television director whose work helped shape shows including Gossip Girl, Veronica Mars, Friday Night Lights, My So-Called Life, NYPD Blue, iZombie, and Riverdale. He died on April 4, 2026, at 71. His career left a lasting mark on television storytelling. RIP."
A fourth simply shared: "Never realised this is where they got Piz from for Veronica Mars. RIP."
