Heartbreak for Lutalo Muhammad as Gold Medal Snatched in Final Second

Lutalo Muhammad was left in tears after losing the Olympic taekwondo final in the very last second, missing out on gold by the narrowest of margins. The 25-year-old British athlete was defeated by Ivorian Cheick Sallah Cisse, who landed a kick to the head with just half a second remaining on the clock.

Muhammad, who won bronze at London 2012, had to settle for silver in Rio. He broke down during a post-fight interview, saying: 'I was half a second away from being Olympic champion and accomplishing my dream. I'm so sorry.' He added: 'I don't want to cry, but I'm so distraught. I'm so sorry for the people that stayed up late to watch me. I let them down. This is so hard.'

The fighter made history as the first British man to reach an Olympic taekwondo final. BBC presenter Mark Chapman described the interview as 'one of the most heartbreaking sporting interviews I've ever seen'.
