According to Page Six, the entire Kardashian family has reportedly been omitted from Vogue editor Anna Wintour's guest list for the upcoming Met Gala in May. The snub, which has been characterised as a security measure, hints at a broader cultural shift within the fashion industry.
The Met Gala, launched in 1948 to raise funds for the Costume Institute, has been presided over by Wintour since 1995. Under her leadership, the event has become a major fundraising occasion, raising $17.4 million last year, and serves as a global advertisement for fashion. Wintour's control over the guest list, seating plan, and often the attire worn cements her status as one of the most powerful figures in fashion.
Wintour first featured Kim Kardashian alongside then-husband Kanye West on the cover of Vogue in April 2014, and Kim has attended every Met Gala this decade. However, the exclusion of the Kardashians comes after a month of fashion shows that emphasised a shift towards more subtle dressing, with terms like "quiet luxury" gaining traction. Critics have also pointed to Kim Kardashian's handling of the Marilyn Monroe dress controversy last year and her delayed response to Balenciaga's controversial ad campaign as factors that may have influenced Wintour's decision.
The snub reflects a wider trend away from the "Kardashianisation" of fashion and social media, as Gen Z users on platforms like TikTok increasingly favour authenticity over polished, aspirational content. In response, Kim Kardashian has posted a makeup-free selfie and manages a TikTok account for her nine-year-old daughter, North West, who posts viral dance videos and skincare routines using Kardashian's brand SKKN.
