Justin Trudeau, Canada's former prime minister, has taken an unconventional path since leaving office in March 2025. While previous Canadian leaders have pursued quiet post-political lives, Trudeau has embraced a celebrity lifestyle, often seen with his girlfriend, pop star Katy Perry.
Trudeau made headlines when he posted a statement about Hungary's election from the Coachella music festival, where he and Perry were watching Justin Bieber. The message, praising democratic change, contrasted sharply with his casual appearance in a backwards baseball cap eating takeout noodles, as posted by Perry on social media.
Political columnist Susan Delacourt noted the contradiction: 'Is he a celebrity, or is he a man of depth?' She said Trudeau's post-political life sparks debate among loyalists about balancing legacy-building with personal enjoyment.
Trudeau's first post-office social media post showed him at a Canadian Tire store, suggesting a return to normalcy. However, he was soon photographed with Perry and other celebrities like Prince Harry. Delacourt revealed that Trudeau and former prime minister Stephen Harper discussed managing post-political life during a royal event.
Trudeau, 54, is the first Canadian prime minister to leave office with a large social media following. His fame predates his relationship with Perry, stemming from his father Pierre Trudeau's rock-star political legacy and his own media coverage, including a Rolling Stone cover.
