Jamie Oliver Qualifies as Pilot After Year of Training

Jamie Oliver has told fans he is 'very proud' as he shared a major achievement far away from his usual career. The chef has been in training to become a qualified pilot.

After a year of the 'hardest' training, which included nine tough exams, Jamie took to Instagram on Thursday (July 2) to confirm his results. He posted a series of photos taken of himself during the 12-month course, including of him flying a plane. The TV star wrote in the caption: 'I’m very proud and excited to share that I’ve qualified as a pilot.'

He told how he fell 'deeply in love with aviation' after his wife, Jools, gifted him a 'first discovery flight' for his birthday. The 51-year-old went on: 'After a year of training I finally passed ..it’s certainly been one of the hardest, most wonderful and inspiring things I have ever done! It has challenged me in so many ways and stretched me as a person.'

Overcoming Dyslexia

Jamie went on to thank all those involved in his training and getting him to the point of qualification, as he also shared: 'I had to do 9 exams for my PPL this was very Daunting for me as a DYSLEXIC.' He added: 'At 50 I feel so invigorated to take on something so challenging, and although the exams were hard, I did it. I’m buzzing I’m on cloud nine, inspired, proud of myself and so grateful to have met so many wonderful people along the way. Now the learning really starts. Let’s see how this inspires my cooking. Private Pilot Licence Details

Jamie has obtained a Private Pilot Licence (PPL), which allows him to fly single-engine aircraft for personal and recreational use. According to the UK Civil Aviation Authority, PPLs are earned after 45 hours of flight training, completing a practical skills test, and passing nine theoretical knowledge exams.

Congratulatory Messages

He was quickly flooded with congratulatory messages, with fellow chef James Martin commenting on his post: 'Congrats welcome to the club,' while Jimmy Doherty replied: 'The best news ever!!!! Congratulations buddy I know how much hard work you put into . Can’t wait to taste your inflight food!!!' Great British Bake Off's Paul Hollywood added: 'Congrats Jamie, see you up there.'
