A Brazilian social media star has died hours after her 26th birthday party, where she and two others consumed homemade whiskey allegedly laced with methanol. Yasmim Ângela Feitosa de Souza, an Instagram comedian with 23,000 followers, celebrated her birthday in Petrolina, eastern Brazil, on Monday night.
De Souza, her boyfriend, and a friend drank about 1.5 litres of whiskey purchased from a rural village outside São Bento do Una city. The following day, de Souza appeared cheerful and accompanied her mother to the market, but fell ill that night and died shortly after, according to her mother, Ozenilda Feitosa.
Her boyfriend and the friend were hospitalised with suspected methanol poisoning; their condition remains unclear. Methanol, a colourless liquid used in cleaning chemicals and solvents, can cause nausea, visual impairment, seizures, and death when ingested.
An investigation is underway, and authorities have seized the remaining whiskey for analysis. De Souza's funeral was held at the Campo da Esperança Cemetery in Petrolina.
