Gwyneth Paltrow has revealed the exact moment she knew her marriage to Coldplay frontman Chris Martin was over, describing a seemingly perfect birthday weekend in Tuscany where she felt an undeniable truth that their relationship had ended.
In a personal essay for British Vogue, the Oscar-winning actress recalled turning 38 while staying in a beautiful cottage in the Tuscan countryside with her then-husband. Despite long walks, candlelit dinners and hand-holding, she said she knew deep down that the marriage was finished, though she kept the realisation to herself for years.
Paltrow and Martin famously announced their separation in 2014 using the term 'conscious uncoupling', which she revealed was actually suggested by their therapist and tested privately for a year before going public. The couple, who share daughter Apple, 21, and son Moses, 18, have remained close friends and continue to co-parent amicably.
Reflecting on their relationship, Paltrow admitted they 'never fully settled into being a couple' and 'just didn't quite fit together', despite loving each other and their children deeply. She said they tried everything to keep the family together before deciding to separate, wanting to avoid the bitter divorces she witnessed growing up.
Since their divorce in 2015, both have moved on: Paltrow married film director Brad Falchuk in 2018, while Martin became engaged to actress Dakota Johnson earlier this year. The former couple continue to spend holidays and birthdays together as a family.
