ITV Grantchester fans have been left bereft after star Robson Green reminded them that the start of the current series marks "the beginning of the end." The ITV crime drama, in which the actor portrays Detective Inspector Geordie Keating, will conclude after its 11th series, reports the Express.
Posting a photograph on Instagram of himself in character alongside co-star Rishi Nair, who plays vicar Alphy Kottaram, Robson informed fans that the show's final run had launched in the US. "It's the beginning of the end," he said. "The final season of Grantchester lands across the pond in the US. Grantchester... A quiet, idyllic, peaceful and quintessentially English village that has a meadow and a beautiful river. Perfect for picnics and murder! It's the Final Season and it's the best one yet!"
Followers were dismayed by the news, with one asking: "Why must it end? All the good stuff goes and we get left with crappy reality shows!" "Nooooooo!" wrote another, accompanied by a crying emoji. "At least we've got a little bit longer to wait until it airs in the UK and pretend it's not the end."
"I haaaaate that Grantchester is ending," another fan lamented. "It feels like you guys are on such a roll with storylines and the chemistry between all of you. We love you!!" Several followers admitted they were "not ready" to bid farewell to the beloved programme. "Gutted," one commented, while another added: "I don't want this to end."
"Oh no!!!" said one disappointed viewer. "This is one of THE BEST programmes on TV, please don't let this be the last series." Another person remarked: "I'm a mess. So happy and yet sad this is the final season. Best of the best!!!"
The series, which follows the detective as he investigates crimes in the Cambridgeshire village of Grantchester during the 1950s and 60s, launched in 2014. Confirmation came last year that it would conclude following its 11th series, though a UK air date for the final season has yet to be announced.
Polly Hill, ITV's director of drama, and Callum Dziedzic, drama commissioner at ITV, said at the time: "This final series marks the end of a golden chapter for ITV drama, and we know audiences will treasure this last summer in Grantchester as much as we will." Grantchester airs on ITV.
