Gemma Atkinson has revealed she became so frustrated with another driver in a supermarket car park that she got out of her vehicle to confront them, prompting fiancé Gorka Marquez to joke she might need "anger management".
The couple, who met on Strictly Come Dancing in 2017 and have two children together, Mia and Thiago, discussed the incident on a recent episode of their podcast, Lost in Translation. Gemma said she determined she was "not having it" after another motorist repeatedly beeped their horn.
Supermarket car park confrontation
Gemma explained that the incident occurred as two elderly pedestrians attempted to cross in front of her vehicle, while another car ahead was reversing simultaneously. The former Emmerdale star said she was compelled to halt and wait for them to cross, but the driver in a smaller vehicle behind her, evidently oblivious to the pedestrians, began hammering the horn.
Gemma recalled: "The car behind me was quite a small car, couldn't see in front of me. All they could see was I wasn't moving, so they beeped their horn, didn't they? And I said, 'I don't know what they want me to do; I can't go anywhere'.
"Two seconds later, they beeped it again so I said - I'm getting angry now - so I said to him (Gorka), 'What's their f*****g problem?' I physically can't move'. And then they did a (long beeping noise)."
Gorka's reaction
Gorka subsequently demonstrated Gemma's response, twisting round in his seat to confront an imaginary motorist through the window. During this, he knocked the microphone on its stand, causing Gemma to chuckle and quip that the professional dancer "broke the set".
Gemma maintained that the third honk continued for approximately "six seconds". During this incident, one of the pedestrians appeared to glance at her as if she was responsible for the horn-blowing, and Gemma determined she was "not having it".
"I'm not having it"
She went on: "And I thought, 'I'm not having it'. So I opened my car door, went out, and I said, 'F*****g wait'. I says, 'There's people in front of me and a car. I said, 'F*****g wait; have a bit of f*****g patience.
"'There's people in front of me and a vehicle reversing so f*****g wait'. The colour drained from her. I got back in the car." Gorka then jumped in, remarking: "Anyway, Gemma, I think you have anger issues."
Gemma acknowledged that Gorka had expressed the same sentiment to her while in the vehicle, explaining: "And he just went, 'Are you okay? You have anger issues'. But she apologised. When she realised, because by this point, the pensioners had got past us, and she went, 'Oh, Sorry, I didn't see them'."
Gemma emphasised that this was precisely the "point", saying the woman hadn't noticed the pedestrians and instead "assumed" while "beeping your horn up my a**e" for seven seconds. Laughing, Gemma revealed that Gorka had enquired whether she required "anger management" following her outburst.
