Medical professionals on site believed he had suffered an extreme allergic reaction.
Show bosses made the difficult decision to remove him from the competition entirely, fearing for his life. A source close to production told The Mirror at the time that they could not risk him getting ill again and explicitly banned him from returning to camp. Nelly shared with the Daily Record that Starr felt deeply betrayed by his homeland. "Freddie had bad feelings about back home," she said. "He felt the British people had deserted him." The comedian was also reportedly estranged from all six of his children at the time of his death, a sad contrast to his very public life and career.
A Pauper's Funeral Averted
In 2019, Freddie Starr died of a heart attack in his Spanish home. The circumstances of his death revealed the true extent of his financial downfall. Reports confirmed he was so broke that authorities initially planned a pauper's burial in Spain.
His dignity was saved by an unexpected act of kindness from Michael Fogg, a funeral director from Sheffield who had never met the comedian. Fogg intervened and personally covered the costs to have Starr's body repatriated to England and given a proper funeral. Explaining his decision to The Daily Mail, Fogg said, "Anyone who can make a funeral director laugh must be a bloody good comedian. And Freddie Starr could make me laugh.
