Former Emmerdale Star Sam Hall Embraces New Career as Electrician After Soap Axe
Sam Hall, the actor who portrayed Samson Dingle on ITV's long-running soap Emmerdale for 15 years, has embarked on a completely different professional path since his departure from the show. Now 21 years old, Hall has qualified as an electrician and is already putting his skills to practical use, including working on the homes of his former castmates.
From Soap Star to Skilled Tradesman
Hall joined the cast of Emmerdale in 2009 at just five years old, playing the son of Sam and Alice Dingle, characters central to the show's iconic Dingle family. His tenure came to an end in 2024 when his character was written out in a dramatic storyline that saw Samson sentenced to prison for perverting the course of justice and assault. The decision to axe Hall was described as 'devastating' at the time, with reports indicating that fellow cast members, including his on-screen father James Hooton, were unhappy and even protested to producers.
Two years on, however, Hall has successfully pivoted away from acting. In an interview with Inside Soap, James Hooton revealed that Hall has not only remained a friend but has also professionally assisted him. 'Sam Hall, who played him, has become a friend of mine,' Hooton said. 'He’s also a qualified electrician so has done a lot of work for me in my house!'
Emotional Farewell and New Beginnings
Hall's exit from Emmerdale was marked by an emotional farewell message shared on the show's social media in August 2024. He thanked the cast and crew for their support over the years and expressed hope that his character might return someday. On-screen, viewers saw Samson bid a moving goodbye to his father before being taken to prison, with Sam Dingle offering words of encouragement about potential early release for good behaviour.
During his time on the soap, Hall tackled challenging storylines, such as becoming a teen dad, but his character's death was noted as particularly tough. The axing reportedly left Hall 'absolutely gutted,' especially as it meant no possibility of a return due to the character being killed off. Despite this, the support from his Emmerdale family helped him through the transition.
A Supportive Cast and Fresh Opportunities
The camaraderie among the Emmerdale cast extended beyond the screen, with many rallying around Hall after his departure. Hooton's hiring of Hall as an electrician underscores the lasting bonds formed during his 15-year stint. This career shift highlights Hall's resilience and adaptability, moving from the spotlight of television to the hands-on world of electrical work.
Hall's story serves as an inspiring example of life after soap opera fame, demonstrating that skills and friendships forged in the entertainment industry can lead to new and fulfilling ventures. As he builds his reputation in the trades, fans and former colleagues alike continue to support his journey beyond the village of Emmerdale.
