Emmerdale star Louise Jameson has confirmed that her character, Mary Goskirk, will play a key role in the aftermath of Charity Dingle's sexual assault by Doctor Caitlin Todd. The actress has promised that the storyline will become 'really dark' as the consequences unfold.
In recent episodes of the ITV soap, viewers witnessed harrowing scenes where Doctor Todd took advantage of a drunk Charity. Prior to the assault, Caitlin had been pressuring Charity for a £70,000 blackmail payment, threatening to reveal that baby Leyla is not Sarah Sugden's child. Unable to raise the money, Charity turned to alcohol to numb her despair. In a bold move, she told Doctor Todd to go ahead and expose the secret, prompting Caitlin to feel a loss of control. She waited for Charity to pass out and then sexually assaulted her.
In Tuesday's episode, now available on ITVX and YouTube, Charity bravely reports the assault to the police. She undergoes a physical examination and questioning by a detective before returning home alone. As the storyline progresses, Emmerdale will focus on Charity's internal struggle over whether to confide in a loved one about the trauma.
One person unaware of Doctor Todd's true nature is Vanessa Woodfield, played by Michelle Hardwick. Vanessa has been romantically involved with Caitlin, believing her lies about Jacob Gallagher being obsessed with her and Charity being a jealous ex. With actress Caroline Harker leaving the role, it is expected that Vanessa will eventually learn the truth about the woman she welcomed into her home, and she will need support.
Louise Jameson, who has played Mary since 2022, stated that Mary's 'shoulders are going to have to grow, as Vanessa might need them to cry on in the aftermath of what's in store for her and Doctor Todd.' She added that the plot 'is going to get really dark. It's a very bold story and Caroline Harker is marvellous.'
Actress Emma Atkins, who plays Charity, previously described this as 'one of the most demanding and significant storylines' she has navigated. She said, 'We know her as a tough, resilient character, but this trauma will expose a deep, raw vulnerability that has been heartbreaking at times to play. I hope this storyline gives even one person the courage to speak out or helps others understand the quiet devastation of trauma.'
