Elizabeth Gilbert, the bestselling author of Eat, Pray, Love, has opened up about her intense and tumultuous relationship with Rayya Elias, a hairdresser and former drug addict who was diagnosed with terminal cancer. In a candid account, Gilbert describes how their friendship evolved into a love affair after Elias's diagnosis, leading Gilbert to leave her husband.
Gilbert recounts the summer of 2017 as a period of despair, living with Elias in a New York apartment that had become a 'dungeon of misery' filled with drugs. Elias, who had been given six months to live over 15 months earlier, refused to die and instead turned to cocaine, morphine, and fentanyl, becoming paranoid and verbally abusive.
The pair first met in 2000 when Gilbert, then married, sought a haircut from Elias. Gilbert recalls being struck by Elias's candidness about her past addiction, showing off her sobriety chips and scars. They remained friends for years before the romantic relationship began after Elias's cancer diagnosis.
Gilbert's story highlights the challenges of caring for a loved one with a terminal illness, especially when addiction resurfaces. Despite the difficulties, Gilbert says she does not regret her decision to be with Elias, describing their time together as intense and transformative.
