A film widely regarded as one of the finest action movies ever made will air on television screens this evening. Despite it being only June, countless viewers consider it a festive favourite, and tonight (Monday, June 15) Die Hard will be shown on Film4.
Cast and Plot
The 1988 film features Bruce Willis, Alan Rickman, Alexander Godunov, and Bonnie Bedelia. Adapted from the 1979 novel Nothing Lasts Forever, it follows New York City police detective John McClane (Bruce Willis) who becomes entangled in a terrorist takeover of a Los Angeles high-rise. The story unfolds during a Christmas Eve party while John visits his estranged wife, turning the holiday gathering into a lone battle to save hostages.
Fan Reactions
Since its release, Die Hard has achieved cult status. One admirer commented on Rotten Tomatoes: "One of the greatest action movies ever made. Alan Rickman as Hans Gruber gives an outstanding performance as the villain, and Bruce Willis gives us a new action hero that we all love to quote." Another said: "Arguably the greatest Christmas movie ever." A third wrote: "What a masterpiece! Timeless and entertaining, it survives to this day." Others echoed: "Without question, the greatest Christmas film ever made!" and "An absolute classic. Best Christmas movie, best action movie." One fan added: "I watched Die Hard last night and honestly, this movie blew me away. It's intense, funny, and way smarter than I expected."
Sequels and Legacy
Die Hard returned in 1990 with a sequel, again set during Christmas. Bruce Willis reprised his role as John McClane, this time stopping terrorists from taking over air traffic control at an airport. Three more films followed, and a sixth was once rumored but later cancelled. Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura confirmed in 2021: "Yeah, no, it's not happening. But we came up with an idea that allowed us to meet the young John McClane and use Bruce, similar to The Godfather Part 2."
Die Hard airs Monday, June 15 at 9pm on Film4.
