David Sullivan has resigned from his position as joint-chairman of West Ham United, effective immediately, following what he describes as "factually incorrect and entirely false" allegations about his personal life that are set to be broadcast on BBC Panorama.
Statement of Resignation
In a statement released on the club's official website, Sullivan explained his decision: "I have recently become aware that factually incorrect and entirely false, decades-old allegations concerning my personal life are due to be broadcast and published. The false allegations levelled against me have been sensationalised by the media." He added that he was stepping down to apply his full energy to fighting these allegations privately, avoiding disruption to the club.
Background and Ownership
Sullivan first acquired a 50 percent stake in West Ham in January 2010 alongside David Gold. Within five months, the pair increased their share to 60 percent, and in 2013 Sullivan purchased an additional 25 percent, making him the largest single shareholder. His tenure saw the club's move from Upton Park to the London Stadium.
Club's Response
West Ham United confirmed Sullivan's departure in a separate statement, noting that none of the allegations relate to the club or its operations. The statement read: "Through his own legal representatives, Mr Sullivan denies any illegal conduct and has taken the decision to step down in order to avoid disruption to the club while he addresses the matter privately." Interim chief executive Karim Virani will lead day-to-day operations, with an update on the board's future structure to follow.
The Panorama Episode
The BBC Panorama episode, titled Predator: The Billionaire Football Boss, is scheduled to air at 8pm tonight. Sullivan's resignation came just hours before the broadcast, which is expected to detail the allegations against him.
