Corrie's Mason Star Luca Toolan: Life After Exit with Famous Dad

Coronation Street fans were left devastated when Mason Radcliffe was written out of the show in 2025. But what has the young actor been doing since his departure?

Rising star Luca Toolan burst onto the scene when he joined the beloved ITV soap in 2023, playing school bully Mason. After making life a misery for Maria Connor's young son Liam Connor, Mason was packed off to a Young Offenders centre. Following his release, he returned to Weatherfield, determined to turn over a new leaf and distance himself from his violent family, including brothers Logan and Matty.

Tragically, in January 2025, Mason met his end when his brothers tracked him down and stabbed him with a zombie knife. So, since leaving the cobbles behind, what has Luca been getting up to?

Mason star's well-known father

Away from the cameras, Luca is no stranger to the spotlight, owing to his famous father, Mike Toolan. Mike is a well-respected radio DJ, best known for his work on The Hits Radio alongside former Emmerdale and Hollyoaks actress Gemma Atkinson. The pair share a close bond. Indeed, when Luca landed his role on Coronation Street, his father was the first person he called to share the thrilling news.

Proud father Mike was eager to share the exciting news with his listeners, saying: "Luca has been unveiled as the new baddie (Mason) on Coronation Street. Absolute dream come 'true' for him. Liam McCheyne and all the amazing Corrie cast and crew have made him feel so at home."

The young actor frequently shares snapshots with his dad across social media. Back in April this year, the duo travelled to Japan together. Luca posted numerous images from their adventure, including shots of a Sumo-wrestling bout and selfies of the pair exploring the country.

Luca 'crumbled' in audition for 'biggest role of my life'

Earlier this year, the actor attended an audition for what he described as the "biggest role of my life". Unfortunately, things didn't work out as he'd hoped. In a TikTok video posted in January this year, Luca documented his journey to an audition. The clip, captioned "POV: Recall Audition for Paul McCartney (Beatles TV show)," showed footage of him preparing and travelling to the casting.

He told viewers: "I've arrived, wish me luck.." In a subsequent video, Luca updated followers on the outcome, though things didn't unfold as he'd hoped. He openly admitted: "I went into the casting office and I'm having a conversation with the casting associate just before going into the room with the casting director. She says one thing that throws me off - 'oh you're the only Paul we're going to see today'. Head gone."

He continued: "In that moment I know I'm the first Paul and I know that we're down to probably about five or six of us max. I've got a chance at landing the biggest role of my entire career, what do I do? My energy, my focus completely transfers from the process to now the outcome."

Lucas explained: "So all I care about in that moment is now okay, I have to impress the casting director, I have to do a good read, I have to make them like me. And this is applicable to anything in life, the moment you take your eyes off the process, the moment you drop the ball and your nervous system goes into loss prevention."

He went on: "I walk in the room, I speak to the casting director, we talk about the project do the read and it's flat. It is miles off what I did on tape and I just crumbled. I crumble."

Coronation Street airs Monday to Friday at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
