Britney Spears was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in Ventura County, California, on Wednesday night, according to reports confirmed by Variety. The singer was taken into custody by the California Highway Patrol around 9:30 p.m. and booked early Thursday morning at approximately 3 a.m.
An arrest record indicates that Spears has since been released and is scheduled to appear in court on May 4. A representative for the pop star issued a statement describing the incident as “unfortunate” and “completely inexcusable,” adding that Spears intends to comply with the law and seek help.
The statement further noted that Spears’ two sons will be spending time with her, and that her loved ones are developing a plan to support her well-being. This arrest comes after Spears was released from a 13-year conservatorship in 2021 and has largely stayed out of the public eye.
Spears recently sold her song catalog and other rights to Primary Wave. In a since-deleted Instagram post from January, she stated she would “never perform in the U.S. again” but expressed a desire to perform with her son in the UK and Australia. She has not released an album since 2016’s “Glory” and last performed live in the US in 2018.
