Bonnie Tyler No Longer in Coma After Health Scare, Remains Seriously Ill
Bonnie Tyler Out of Coma, Still Seriously Ill

Bonnie Tyler is reportedly 'no longer in a coma' following a recent health scare, but remains 'seriously ill', according to her team.

The Welsh singer, 77, best known for 'Total Eclipse Of The Heart', was placed in an induced coma by doctors to aid her recovery after being rushed to a hospital near her home in Faro, Portugal, last month for emergency surgery.

A spokesperson for the singer previously stated: “As of this morning, Bonnie remains seriously ill but stable in hospital in Faro, however, her doctors are still positive that she will make a full recovery.”

The representative added that the family has been distressed by many 'lurid and untrue rumours' circulating and asked for 'privacy and decency at this difficult time'.

Bonnie was initially taken to hospital due to abdominal pains that began shortly after she arrived in Portugal, where she owns a second home. It was discovered that she had suffered a tear in her bowel, leading to emergency surgery.

However, a new statement has confirmed that Bonnie is out of her coma, with doctors hopeful that she will make a full recovery over time.

Her representative said: "Bonnie is no longer in a coma, but remains seriously ill. Although her condition is improving, the recovery process is slow."

Bonnie, whose real name is Gaynor Hopkins, rose to fame in the 1980s with her number one UK single 'Total Eclipse Of The Heart'. The Grammy-nominated star has released numerous hit songs over the years, including 'Holding Out For A Hero', 'It’s A Heartache', and 'If You Were A Woman (And I Was A Man)'.

The singer is scheduled to tour Europe later this year to mark 50 years since the release of her 1976 breakthrough hit 'Lost In France', which charted across Europe. Performances are planned later this month in Malta and Germany, with additional shows across the UK, Austria, Hungary, Turkey, and Romania.

In 2013, Bonnie represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest with her song 'Believe in Me', finishing in 19th place out of 26 entries with 23 points.

Bonnie's accolades include three Grammy Award nominations and three Brit Award nominations. In 2022, she was awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours for services to music.

She said of the honour at the time: "I’m just a girl from a small town in Wales who just loves to sing. So to be recognised for that in this way is very significant to me and my family and friends."
