Bill Roache, the 93-year-old actor who plays Ken Barlow on Coronation Street, has reportedly signed a new six-figure contract to remain on the ITV soap for another year. The deal extends his record-breaking tenure on the show, which began 66 years ago, and fuels his ambition to continue acting until he is 100.
Fans had feared that Roache's character might be killed off in an upcoming car crash storyline, part of a crossover event with Emmerdale dubbed 'Corriedale'. However, a source confirmed to The Sun that Ken Barlow will remain on screen for at least another 12 months.
Roache holds the world record for the longest-serving actor in a continuous role. He is reportedly one of the highest-paid cast members, earning an estimated £250,000 per year. Speaking after receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award earlier this year, Roache said: 'I'm looking forward to being in the programme for many more years to come - hopefully until I am 100!'
Last year, Roache avoided a second bankruptcy after settling a tax bill of over £500,000 with HM Revenue and Customs. He had previously faced financial difficulties linked to a £500 million tax avoidance scheme he invested in during 2012. To supplement his income, he has been selling personalised video messages on the Cameo platform for up to £51 each.
