Aubrey Plaza and Christopher Abbott made their first official red carpet appearance as a couple at the 79th Tony Awards on Sunday night. The 41-year-old White Lotus actress proudly cradled her baby bump, beaming beside the 40-year-old Girls actor at Radio City Music Hall in New York.
Pregnancy and Personal Journey
Plaza confirmed in April that she is expecting her first child. The Parks and Recreation star had stepped away from the spotlight following the death of her husband, Jeff Baena, who died by suicide in January 2025 at age 47. The couple had quietly separated in September 2024 but remained in contact. Plaza and Abbott, who previously worked together on Black Bear (2020) and the play Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, are believed to have started their relationship last summer.
Tony Awards Appearance
Plaza wore a black and white pinstriped dress with spaghetti straps that hugged her growing belly. She styled her brunette hair in loose waves and complemented her red nails with matching lip gloss. Abbott, nominated for best featured actor for his role as Biff in Death of a Salesman, wore a black velvet suit and white shirt. The award ultimately went to Alden Ehrenreich for Becky Shaw.
Baby Gender Reveal
The couple's red carpet outing comes after Plaza appeared to reveal the baby's gender. At the Tribeca Festival premiere of The Accompanist, she lifted her top to show her belly to Susan Sarandon. Footage captured Plaza responding to Sarandon's question with, "It's a girl." An insider told People that Plaza and Abbott "feel very blessed" and that the pregnancy was "a beautiful surprise after an emotional year."
Grief and Moving Forward
Plaza has spoken sparingly about Baena's death. In a joint statement with his family, she called it "an unimaginable tragedy." She later appeared on Saturday Night Live's 50th anniversary special, wearing a tie-dye shirt in tribute to their wedding. On Amy Poehler's Good Hang podcast, Plaza said she feels "OK" and "very grateful to be moving through the world," but acknowledged that "a giant ocean of just awfulness" is always present. Fans have defended her against criticism that she moved on too quickly, noting that she and Baena were already separated and that people grieve differently.
