In one of the most heart-warming stories from a difficult season for Liverpool FC, lifelong Red Patricia Mallett returned to Anfield after 60 years away. Born on May 9, 1936, in Everton, Patricia celebrated her 90th birthday surrounded by her family at the stadium where she first fell in love with football.
A Dream Come True
Patricia attended the match against Chelsea on May 9, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Despite the result, she was overwhelmed by the experience. Her granddaughter, Alexa Mallett, along with her son Karl and brother Terry, joined her for the special day.
Patricia's love for Liverpool began in childhood, inspired by her uncle Tommy, a professional footballer. Her first match left a lasting impression, not just for the game but for the atmosphere. She recalled men in caps and overcoats, smoking, and the lack of facilities.
Family Connections
After marrying Steve Mallett, an ECHO printer, Patricia moved to Anfield in 1958, living near the stadium. They later moved to Pensby on the Wirral after Karl was born. Patricia worked as a sales rep for Carlsberg, which later became a Liverpool sponsor. She stopped attending matches to raise her family.
Following the death of her daughter Karen from cancer in 2019, Patricia moved to Suffolk to be closer to Karl and Alexa. Despite leaving Liverpool, her heart remains there. Alexa said, "We're constantly watching football together and she's always texting me about it."
Three Generations United
Karl, 63, wanted to create a memory for three generations of Liverpool fans. With help from sponsor AXA, they secured tickets that met Patricia's accessibility needs. Patricia was amazed by the transformed stadium, saying, "It was mind-blowing. The size of that beautiful stadium... it was the finest thing I've seen for a long time."
Alexa described Patricia as "an incredible woman, the most glamorous nan." Karl added, "She's the person that everyone loves, very outgoing, typical of Liverpool cuddlers."
Louise Isaacs from AXA UK said, "We were delighted to help the Mallett family make this milestone birthday even more special."
