Customers of a 'tiny' shop on a Huyton estate are comparing it to luxury department store Harrods after a major renovation. Liam Roberts, owner of Create a Cake on Page Moss Lane, recently completed a full refurbishment of the building, taking it 'back to brick'. The response has been overwhelming, with visitors remarking, 'It's like Harrods in here.'
From Sponge to Spectacular
Liam Roberts, 38, from Childwall, has been running the award-winning shop for over 15 years. In that time, he and his team have created thousands of bespoke cakes. 'Cakes aren't just cakes anymore,' he told the ECHO. The creations range from a Tunnock's Caramel Wafer bar to Nike 110 trainers, and even a replica of Clatterbridge Hospital. 'We've done it all. We've done someone giving birth. We made a sewing machine that was one of our favourites. Every one of us stood back in that kitchen and was like, "Oh, my God." We've done thousands of cupcakes—probably hundreds of thousands now.'
The shop has also taken on more unusual requests. 'We've basically built a whole body. We've done people who've had pacemakers fitted and wanted the heart. We've done boobs for new boobs, people who've had vasectomies. And lots of hen parties—you can imagine what those are.'
Humble Beginnings
Liam's journey began at age 21 when he 'sold everything he had' to open his own shop. 'It was dead cheap, but it needed every single thing doing to it. It was literally a front door and that was it. I spent a couple of thousand doing it up and then grew it. I had nothing to lose, so I just went for it.' Through hard work, trade shows, wedding fairs, and networking, the business grew organically. 'I never had overnight success. I just worked as normal for years.'
The turning point came during the Covid-19 pandemic, when Liam built a website and expanded social media. Many original customers have remained loyal. 'People come in now and say, "I used to be pregnant with her getting cakes off you, and now she's 13." It's funny, the whole full circle.'
Community Hub
In 2026, Liam welcomed '400 people into the tiny shop in the middle of an estate' for Father's Day. 'The customer base just comes back and comes back. We know loads of people in the queue. When they're standing in line, we know them, we've made all their cakes. I'll think, "He's come from Ormskirk" and I'll think, "He's come from there."'
The renovation has elevated the shop's appeal. 'I'm proud of what we've got now to show off. It was always a nice shop anyway. People used to come even when it was the other way and say, "Isn't it lovely in here?" When it got done the way I wanted it, people go, "Oh my God, Liam, I'd live here." It's just a bit different, still the same products, no price changes, nothing's different.'
