Woman solves mystery of holes in husband's T-shirts

A woman has finally discovered why her husband's T-shirts keep developing small holes at the bottom, after asking for advice on social media.

Posting in the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook group, she wrote: "Why does this always happen to my husband's tee shirts? Honestly, he can have a brand new tee on and within a day there are holes. All my clothes are untouched. Any advice would be gratefully received."

She included a picture of her husband's T-shirt alongside the post, and other users said they had experienced the same problem.

What causes the holes?

One person commented: "Snap happens to mine – think it's catching on zip of jeans or trousers – that's the only think I can think of?" Another added: "I've seen people say it's the zip or belt buckle." A third asked: "Does he wear a belt? My husband has these holes from his. Hope that helps."

Stylist Alison Gary explained on her website Wardrobe Oxygen that the pinholes are usually caused by friction against the metal hardware on jeans.

She said: "Your button, but also the rivets, zipper, and the tough knots of thread around the fly can wear against knit T-shirts."

How to avoid the damage

Gary also noted the problem could come from working on countertops, standing desks, or wearing a heavy crossbody bag, and that a washing machine could be to blame, especially on a heavy cycle.

Her advice to prevent the holes is to tuck the top into trousers, even if it is only half tucked in, which should stop the fabric from rubbing against the metal.
