The 2026 Academy Awards nominations have been announced, with the horror film 'Sinners' breaking a long-standing record. The American horror film, directed by Ryan Coogler, received 16 nominations, the most in the 98-year history of the Oscars. The previous record of 14 nominations was held by 'All About Eve', 'Titanic', and 'La La Land'.
'Sinners' is set in 1932 in the Mississippi Delta and stars Michael B. Jordan as twin brothers who return to their hometown in the Jim Crow South, where they confront a supernatural evil. The film also features Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O'Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, and Delroy Lindo.
Director Ryan Coogler reacted to the record-breaking nominations, calling it 'pretty crazy'. He told Deadline: 'I did not have any expectations when it came to the recognition of what they [the team] did. For me, people just showing up to the movies and having a good time, that would’ve been enough.' He added that he was 'so thankful that everybody said yes to this movie.'
Other major nominees include 'One Battle After Another' with 13 nods, followed by 'Sentimental Value', 'Frankenstein', and 'Marty Supreme' with nine each, and 'Hamnet' with eight. The best actor category includes Timothée Chalamet for 'Marty Supreme', Leonardo DiCaprio for 'One Battle After Another', Ethan Hawke for 'Blue Moon', Michael B. Jordan for 'Sinners', and Wagner Moura for 'The Secret Agent'.
The best actress nominees are Jessie Buckley for 'Hamnet', Rose Byrne for 'If I Had Legs I’d Kick You', Kate Hudson for 'Song Sung Blue', Renate Reinsve for 'Sentimental Value', and Emma Stone for 'Bugonia'. Notable snubs include Paul Mescal for his role in 'Hamnet' and the film 'Wicked: For Good', which received no nominations after its predecessor 'Wicked' earned 10 last year.
The 98th Academy Awards will take place on Sunday, March 15, 2026, hosted by Conan O'Brien. The ceremony will be broadcast on ITV1 and streamed on ITVX in the UK, likely starting late on March 15 and continuing into the early hours of Monday morning.
