Syd and Betty Lyon, from Litherland, have celebrated 70 years of marriage. The couple, who met at a wedding in the 1950s, were married on August 25, 1956, at St Phillip’s Church in Litherland.
Betty, 91, and Syd, 90, marked the milestone surrounded by their family, including their two daughters, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The celebration took place at The Tithebarn Care Home in Great Crosby, where Betty has lived since March this year.
A daily routine of visits
Syd visits Betty every day, according to their eldest daughter, Susie, 66, who attended with her sister Karen, 61. Susie said: "Mum and dad have always been very happy."
She added: "Their main joy in life is country music and going to Benidorm on holiday. They absolutely love going on cruises as well; that was their big passion."
Lifelong ties to Litherland
The couple lived in Litherland all their lives and used to go to the Litherland British Legion for country music. Syd worked at the British American Tobacco warehouse on Commercial Road, Vauxhall, for decades. The factory closed on November 24, 1989, with 476 people made redundant.
Betty worked in an arts supply shop called the Paint Pot on the New Strand.
Royal recognition
The pair received a card from the King and Queen in recognition of seven decades of marriage. Susie added: "They have seven grandchildren and great-grandchildren and they absolutely love them."
