Charlie Hunnam is returning to the world of his hit FX drama Sons of Anarchy, but not in the way fans might expect. The Newcastle-upon-Tyne star is behind the new meta series Legends, which will see the Sons of Anarchy cast reunite at a convention, reports the Mirror.
In the series, the actors face a “real-world” threat and the boundaries between life and art blur, as reported by Variety. The series is described as “both a love letter to the series and a fun meta twist”.
Kurt Sutter gives his blessing
Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter is not involved but has given his blessing to the Queer as Folk actor. He posted on Instagram: “I’m not involved with Legends at all, nor should I be.”
He went on to say in a video: “It has nothing to do with the characters I created or the mythology.” He added: “It is really about the show and the legacy of the show, and quite frankly, there are thousands of people who are responsible for that legacy.”
Fan reactions to the announcement
People have shared their thoughts on the upcoming Legends. One person posted on X (previously Twitter): “Haters in the comments but if done right this could be interesting, really good and something fairly original. Ain’t that what y’all are always clamoring for?” They added: “Will be fun seeing the SOA cast back together regardless [sic].”
A second person said: “So Galaxy Quest but Sons of Anarchy version? I'm here for it. Especially since half the cast of this show are certified badasses in real life.” A third posted: “So they stole the plot of the #90210 reunion/reboot that failed horribly a few years ago? These “meta” reunions never play out the way they sound when pitched. Good luck bucking that trend #SOA cast.”
Cast and upcoming projects
Despite many of the characters from Sons of Anarchy meeting a brutal end in the show, Legends will see some of the show’s biggest stars returning. The series has been written and executive produced by Hunnam and How I Met Your Mother writer Jonathan Groff, not to be confused with the Frozen actor and Broadway star.
Some of the cast said to be returning are House of the Dragon star Tommy Flanagan, who played Chibs, Hellboy’s Ron Perlman, who played Clay Morrow, and Kim Coates of Bloodline fame, who played Tig. Further cast includes Katey Sagal, who played Gemma Teller Morrow, Maggie Siff, who portrayed Tara, Mark Boone Junior, who played Bobby, and Theo Rossi, who starred as Juice.
Further casting is expected to be announced and there’s no release date for Legends as yet. The news comes ahead of Hunnam’s role in the forthcoming Ryan Murphy-Netflix vehicle Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story.
He will be playing Lizzie’s father Andrew Borden, with the project reuniting him with not only Murphy but also Vicky Krieps after they starred together in 2025’s Monster: The Ed Gein Story. Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story was announced last year and a trailer recently dropped for the true crime series.
Hunnam took centre-stage in Ryan Murphy’s Monster: The Ed Gein Story as the titular grave robber and killer in a narrative that itself strayed wildly from the original case and became a meta-series in its own right. The actor was working on Legends three years before FX gave the show the green light, while Hunnam would have been working on Monster: The Ed Gein Story.
Sons of Anarchy is streaming on Disney+ now.
