Aldi's own-label fish fingers have emerged as the winner of a supermarket taste test, scoring a perfect 10/10 and outperforming Birds Eye, which cost £2 more at £4.25. The results come from a comparison of fish fingers from Aldi, Lidl, M&S, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda and Birds Eye, all cooked according to their oven guidelines.
Branded contender beaten
Birds Eye, priced at £4.25 from Sainsbury's, scored 8/10. The fish fingers cracked open during cooking, similar to Asda's, and looked somewhat slender, though the batter stuck better than many others. The fish was tender and not chewy, showing why the brand remains popular.
Marks and Spencer's version, at £2.80, edged ahead with 9/10. It packed in plenty of fish, was buttery with no chewiness, and had a satisfyingly crisp batter that stayed intact.
Supermarket rivals ranked
Lidl's offering, at £1.99, scored 7/10 with a perfect golden coating, though the batter separated slightly when eaten. Tesco's fish fingers scored 5/10, emerging misshapen and slightly charred, with more batter than fish and a greasy taste.
Asda's fish fingers, at £1.61, scored 4/10, suffering breakage during cooking with the batter peeling away. Sainsbury's came bottom with 3/10, despite a deep golden colour and pleasant batter flavour, because the fish was excessively chewy and left a metallic aftertaste.
Winner revealed
Aldi's fish fingers delivered a golden, crispy batter that clung to the fish, with a substantial portion and a lovely crunch, far from soggy. They surpassed Birds Eye considerably and will be the go-to choice going forward.
