Aaron Ramsey Set for Shock Management Role at Oxford

Aaron Ramsey is poised to take over as manager of League One side Oxford United, just weeks after announcing his retirement from professional football. The former Arsenal and Wales midfielder, 35, is in advanced talks with the club following the sacking of Matt Bloomfield last week after Oxford's relegation to the third tier.

Ramsey's Rapid Transition to Management

According to The Telegraph, Ramsey has been working on his coaching badges in recent seasons and even had a brief spell in charge of his boyhood club Cardiff City. The Welshman reportedly turned down interest from the Welsh FA, who were considering him as a potential successor to Craig Bellamy amid links to Burnley, to pursue a career in club management.

Ramsey is expected to bring former Wales teammate Chris Gunter as his assistant. The move comes shortly after he confirmed his retirement following a stint in Mexico, with a heartfelt statement thanking fans, clubs, and family.

Oxford's Relegation and Managerial Vacancy

Oxford United have been searching for a new manager since Bloomfield was dismissed last week after the club's relegation to League One. Bloomfield had only taken over from Gary Rowett in January. Ramsey's appointment would mark his first permanent managerial role, and he is expected to lead the club into the 2026/27 campaign.

In his retirement statement, Ramsey said: "This has not been an easy decision to make. After a lot of consideration, I have decided to retire from football. Firstly, I want to start with Wales. It has been my privilege to wear the Welsh shirt and experience so many incredible moments in it."
