A woman has recounted alleged paranormal experiences in her family home in Ramsgate, Kent, including an encounter with a ghostly little girl who bit her sister. The story was shared on the BBC's Uncanny podcast, hosted by Danny Robins.
Ghostly Encounter in 1999
Rebecca, who lived with her parents and siblings in a five-bedroom Victorian house on a cliff overlooking the sea, said that in 1999 her younger sister Charlotte came down to breakfast and described a strange event. Charlotte said she was in bed when the door opened and a little girl entered her room holding a bucket and spade. The girl approached the bed and bit Charlotte from her hands up to her face.
Rebecca said: "She was terrified; it really scared her." Danny Robins noted that the incidents began to happen frequently, but no marks ever appeared on Charlotte's skin. Rebecca said her family did not think much of it initially, but later it "comes up again with other people."
Sinister Events and Historical Context
The episode's synopsis reveals further alleged phenomena: after finding the skeleton of a dog buried in their garden, the family began hearing a phantom dog running through the corridors. It also states that while the family lived happily alongside their spectral visitors, a sinister male presence seemed to manifest at certain times of year.
Danny investigated possible explanations, delving into Victorian railway tunnels beneath the house. These tunnels originally ferried holidaymakers to the beach but later provided shelter for thousands during the Blitz. People brought furniture from their homes and installed a canteen and toilet facilities. Around 530 children were not evacuated from Ramsgate, and some played in the tunnel. Two children, aged one and four, were killed during a bombing raid.
The podcast poses the question of whether one of these children could have haunted Rebecca's family home. Additionally, a soldier was run over by a train in the tunnel in 1918, which might explain the "male presence" in the house.
