Plans have been submitted to South Lanarkshire Council to transform a vacant former bank in Uddingston into a children’s day nursery. The application relates to the former Bank of Scotland building at 56 Main Street, which has stood empty since the branch closed in May 2025.
Planning documents show the property was purchased by the applicant in November 2025 with the intention of converting it into a children’s day care facility. The application was received by the council on June 5 and validated on July 1 with a decision due by August 31.
Nursery capacity and design
If approved, the nursery would cater for up to 52 children across three age groups. The ground floor would provide space for 24 children aged three to five and 10 children aged two to three, while the first floor would include a dedicated baby area for up to 18 children from birth to two years.
Planning documents state that creating outdoor space for children was a key priority in the site’s design.
Operator and background
The proposed nursery would be operated by the owners of Treehouse Nursery, which is located less than 100 metres away on Old Mill Road. Treehouse Nursery has been established for more than 30 years and has operated under its current ownership for the past 28 years, during which time it has cared for around 2000 children.
The business works in partnership with South Lanarkshire Council to deliver funded early learning and childcare places, helping provide accessible childcare for local families.
Public reaction
The application has attracted both support and opposition from members of the public. Ten objections have been submitted, with concerns including the impact of fencing. Some objectors argue the fencing creates a barrier affecting neighbouring businesses visibility from Main Street, with others describing the fence as an “eyesore”. Parking and traffic issues have also been raised by objectors.
Plans have also received nine letters of support. Supporters say there is a shortage of nursery provision in the area and that demand for childcare continues to grow. Others believe the former bank building would be well suited to its proposed new use.
