A woman was killed when a man fell from a 12th floor building and landed on top of her in a horrifying incident in Japan.
Incident details
The tragedy unfolded at around 1am near Yabamachi Station on the Nagoya Municipal Subway Meijo Line. Houra Inaba, 23, was walking along the street when she was struck by Shinsei Taguchi, 29, who fell on her. Inaba's friend called emergency services and both were rushed to hospital, but Inaba tragically died.
Taguchi remains unconscious and in critical condition following the incident on July 19, according to reports. It is currently not known if the man jumped deliberately or if it was an accidental fall. The location was cordoned off while investigators examined the scene.
Previous incidents
The Sakae district is densely populated with high-rise apartments and offices, and known for its shops, entertainment venues and heavy pedestrian traffic. In August 2024, a 17-year-old high school girl jumped from a commercial building in Yokohama, killing a 32-year-old woman walking below. The pair were taken to hospital after being found bleeding outside Yokohama Station. The girl died an hour later while the 32-year-old woman died shortly after.
More people under 18 take their own lives on September 1 than any other day in Japan, just before the start of the academic year, according to official figures. Police are yet to determine a cause in this particular case. In October 2020, a 17-year-old high school boy jumped from a commercial complex in Osaka, killing a 19-year-old female university student on the street.
