A 68-year-old woman from Oldham who died after entering the sea to rescue her pet dog has been identified as Theresa Wheelhouse. The incident occurred on Saturday, May 30, at Rossall Beach in Cleveleys, Lancashire.
Details of the Incident
Emergency services were called at 8:31 PM following reports of two people in distress in the water. The couple, both in their 60s, had entered the sea to save their dog, which had become stuck. They were recovered by HM Coastguard and taken to hospital.
Sadly, Ms. Wheelhouse was pronounced dead at the hospital. Her male partner, who was initially in critical condition, is now recovering. Police confirmed there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding her death.
Police Statement
Thornton-Cleveleys Police issued a statement on Facebook on June 18, expressing condolences: “Our thoughts remain with her loved ones.” They added that an inquest will be held in October.
The statement also highlighted water safety, noting: “This was one of a number of fatalities in Lancashire and across the UK recently in open water.” They shared tips from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service and resources from the Royal Life Saving Society as part of Drowning Prevention Week, running until June 20.
