Strictly Come Dancing champion Chris McCausland has revealed he was mugged at knifepoint as a teenager. In his new autobiography, the 48-year-old comedian describes how two men pressed flick knives into his stomach during a night out in Liverpool.
McCausland, who is blind due to a genetic disorder, wrote that he tried to fob off the attackers with loose change, but they had followed him from a cash machine and demanded notes. He handed over £30 before a passer-by shouted, causing the muggers to flee.
The comedian said he never told his parents about the incident for fear they would become overprotective. He added that he did not believe the mugging was related to his sight loss, but worried that disclosing it might change his parents' attitude towards his independence.
In the book, McCausland also reflects on his Strictly win, noting that even his postman doubted his chances. The memoir, titled 'Keep Laughing', is published by Michael Joseph and is available now.
